A Community Land Trust is one of many tools that can be leveraged by disadvantaged but organized communities to ensure equitable development, sustained access to affordable land, and to combat potential land speculation and gentrification pressures.

CLTs are community-governed non-profits that hold and steward land for community benefit including urban farming, affordable housing, and other critical community needs. They are a proven model for preserving affordability and wealth building, promoting development without displacement, and shifting who has decision-making power over community resources. The first CLT emerged during the Civil Rights movement and was started by Black farmers to combat land theft in the American South.
